On My Way

After a bit of a stump with ideas for holiday presents, i am officially on my way. I have finished a couple of small projects, but i'm excited about what is still to come. After spending the afternoon yesterday sitting by the fire and reading over my various craft books, i have decided on a few gifts. I still have more to think of, but i will wait to see people's gift lists first.

For instance, i'm going to use this beautiful silk fabric to make a tea pot cozy for my partner's grandmother.

And this awesome pre-Star Wars fabric will be made into a framed canvas art piece. My brother-in-law Loves Star Wars and just had a baby boy. I'm going to embroider his name into the fabric and then frame it.

And, i finished a yo-yo belt for my sister, as well as these cute ballerina cake topper magnets.

My other ideas include making placemats for my mom with Indian block print stencils, a felt record dog toy for my brother-in-law's dog, and a book purse for my sister. I will post again soon to share my progress!

A table runner, pieced, appliqued, and quilted. While this is actually a wedding present, it is the thing I sewed this month,and took so long that it will certainly serve as a Christmas present for this couple as well.

I have been sewing and knitting for one year. Last summer I found this wonderful web and I loved the idea of a sewing along. This will be my first Sew? I knit! proyect. I would like to have my own made-by-myself xmas apron for this holiday and I also plann to sew some round xmas mittens.

Patchwork Bibs

An idea hatched during the quilt-it challenge and only brought to fruition this week. I've actually been planning these in my head for a LONG time, - they are turning out really cute and are super fun to make. I'll have them forsale in my etsy shop as soon as they are finished (early next week).



I'm also making some of these up for my new nephew (well for his mommy) for Christmas - so I've hit two birds with one stone! Thanks! If you'd like to know more about the bibs click on my name to visit the blog.

Love this time of year....

A "jumpstart" on the Holiday Jumpstart. I am so glad this is the theme for this round. Perfect! I try to create handmade ornaments for the five of us each year, including names and dates for our tree. A tradition I started for us when my 18 yo was first born and celebrated his first christmas. I have one last ornament to finish for my family for 2006, then on to presents and handmade cards. Happy Fall to All!

My Quilts

I made two quilts. One for my living room and the other for my newest niece. I have moved my blog to wordpress but have to use my old blogger address to post to this group until I figure out how to link my new blog to SewiKnit.

My battery died while I tried to take the baby quilt pic. Will post Saturday.

Next Project: Holiday Jumpstart

Good morning everyone!

The holidays are approaching, faster than we know it. So we decided that the next round of Sew? I Knit will be "Holiday Jumpstart." Starting October 15th and ending on December 24th, the focus of Sew? I Knit will be to get all those holiday gifts and decorations done, over with and out of the way. We're all about stress minimization over here. Sign ups are from October 1st until the 15th.

I know that I'm late with my quilt but I had to wait till my placemat reaches the person I've been swapping it with, so I could not post earlier. By it finally arrived at Anna's, so I can show it to you. ^^



It's a placemat size 10 in x 8 in, made of cotton and linnen, with a tree patchwork.
I enjoyed this project and I liked all your creations! ^^

Dino Quilt

Funny, I seem to remember posting the last project at about 11pm on the evening of the deadline........

Anyway, I had hoped to finish this dinosaur quilt for my son this week, mainly because my daughter is now begging me to start her kitty quilt. But family events intervened and it was not to be.

But I thought I'd show the quilt top anyway, and if you are interested in it, you might check out my blog in the next week or so for progress. I had enough interested comments from a post a few weeks ago, that I decided to make up a tutorial on how I designed this from my son's artwork and translated it into fabric. So watch for that in the next couple of weeks.

Quilted blanket for my relaxation time

I know today is deadline...so I just finished my quilted blanket.The arrangement of each piece was difficult for me and the quilting by the sewing machine took long time.I used some beautiful cotton and antique linen for top and double-gauze for back , because I think double-gauze is very softly.

I think the blanket will make me happy :>

These are some quilted bags I´ve made to take along to an autumn fair.

Until the Quilt is Done

I am working hard on my hankie quilt, and all the squares are sewn together. Now i just have to do the backing and attach it all. It should be done for Sept. 15, which is so exciting because this project has been just 'sitting around' for a year now!

I went to a friend's baby shower yesterday and realized that part of the gift i gave her were a quilted project - these baby bibs i made her. Since they're quilted, so i just wanted to share! And show you that i have been busy making quilted things, just not the massive project i had planned!

Quilted Tote Bag

I just finished this quilted tote bag. The leaves are machine embroidered and there is some strip piecing on the front. I have plans for another with more patchwork...I might even make the deadline! Stay tuned...

Quilted bib

I know I`ve been a bad bad person for not finishing my top. I was going to, really, but life interfered, I guess (I`ll save you from explanations). I feel especially bad for not checking this blog out as much as I should have - but I plan to catch up!




I did finish the current project though: a quilted baby bib for my nephew, here modeled by it`s cute-but-too-excited-to-stay-still recipient. Upset with my failure with the previous project, I didn`t want to announce I was going to make anything in time, since I wasn`t sure I was really going to make it. But I must say this was a great project! I`ve been planning to give a try to patchwork, and had fun making this. (Though sewing bias tape (my first time) was hellish, just as I suspected it would be. I´ve always known bias tape is evil.) I´ll surely be making more patchwork in the future.

Quilted Pillow for a Red Room

The past few weeks I have been painting and redecorating my daughter's room and I was ever aware that the sew along was coming to an end....So, I decided to use some left over silk, a bit of the curtain fabric and some left over linen like fabric to create a pillow for her room.


Ta Da! Done.

The picture does not do the colours justice unfortunately.
And so I am complete before school starts and I have no more time to sew!

A little quilted bag

Hi everyone! Pardon me for the late introduction. I'm a knitter and a beginner at sewing. This is my first attempt at quilting, so I thought I'd start with something small. It's definitely not a quilt, but it does have a quilted element!

This is a quilted drawstring bag that I made for my daughter. The pattern is based on this tutorial for a drawstring backpack (the "Mama Backpack"), except that I didn't make it into a backpack and added a strap instead, and I added a batting between the outer fabric and the lining and quilted it. I also made the bag smaller, more toddler-sized rather than "Mama-sized".

Finally I´ve managed to finish some sewing. I love the colour combination red and blue and hope to finish a bag today aswell. I´ve been knitting socks for winter and that´s been keeping me away from the sewing machine.

not exactly a quilt

but here's my contribution to this months theme. I have never really considered myself a quilter. That was until I discovered Japanese craft magazines, I recently purchased this machine quilting book and thought I would try out the log cabin pillow. Being a novice I kept it simple and just did simple 1/2 inch lines. I used cotton batting and it is closed with a tied envelope back. The pillow will be a birthday gift for a friends daugther who is turning 6.

here is the beginning of my quilted project...i just cut the fabric pieces. i plan to make a quilted hot pad. i hope to finish in a couple hours. a small easy project, yes...but hard to sneak time in w/ a little baby...i have to wait until she naps...

My Hankie Quilt WIP

I've had a lot of projects on the go lately, but i recently sat down with my vintage hankies and have mapped out the format for the quilt. I also have the fabric i need for the backing, and all i have to do now is set a date with my sewing machine and zoom zoom the hankies together! And, i have solved what to do with the different sizes of hankies - i don't have the heart to cut them to size but i will be added other fabric in between squares.

Here is my Sew I Knit Project for August-September. I added ribbon to the back to hang it from the loft railing.

This chicken seems to approve.

My Quilt is Done!

Here is a slightly crooked picture of the quilt I made for this month's quilt project challenge.

The fabric choices were inspired by the wildflowers that grow in my yard. The quilt measures about 30 inches by 30 inches. I machine quilted it with my walking foot. I plan to make a sleeve for it and hang it on the wall. It was a lot of fun making it. Now I'd like to make a bigger one for a bed. Woo hoo!

Pineapple Quilt

I picked out some fabric last weekend for the Pineapple Quilt. This is a quilt pattern I got when I was in Hawaii. The finished quilt is 40” x 40”, so it is more of a wall quilt or table quilt. I decided to do mine in blues. Here is what I found.



The blue squared fabric on top and to the left I plan to use for the center of the pineapples. The little blue flowered fabric I plan to use in the background. Lastly the blue fabric on the bottom I plan to outline the pineapples and also use for the border and the back of the quilt.

This is my first time using a pattern for a quilt. I am use to just making it up as I go and just using my imagination, that way when you are finished it is always right because there was no blueprint that you need to compare it too. This will be interesting and a challenge for me to stick to the pattern. I still might tweak it a bit we will see.

Hi all!

My name is Jeanine. My apologies for just getting around to posting an introduction. What's worse, is I practically harassed the list moms about joining.

I am very excited to have joined the sew?i knit! along. I've been a knitter and crocheter since childhood. I took up sewing as a teen and used to do it quite frequently. I hadn't touched a sewing machine in MANY years. I recently purchased a Janome Jem 660 sewing machine with a five piece quilting kit. I've done very little sewing with it so far. Why? I haven't fully decided yet. Time is one of the reasons. But as I'm sure you know, you find ways to make the time if you are jonesin for something. I've always wanted to learn to quilt. A friend from my old knitting group actually began to teach me about 2 years ago, but I moved soon after and lost contact with her.

For my project, I decided I will be making the Shimmy Shake and Bake Apron from the book Denyse Schmidt's Quilts. I figure the patchwork pocket on the front of the apron would be a great introduction to quilting at least from the patchwork perspective. I've also been thinking about making matching pot holders that from the book The Impatient Patchworker.

Looking forward to seeing everybody's projects.

Just to make you think I'm working on a quilt...

This is a pretty hectic time for me-I'm moving out of state tomorrow-so I'm not really working on anything for the sewalong this time, but I thought I would share a little about my quilting. Hopefully I will be able to get my machine up and running again soon!

I learned to quilt almost 7 years ago. When I started knitting all quilting came to a screeching halt. I joined this sewalong to get motivated to sew again, in the hopes that I might finish this quilt:

I have about 2/3 of the machine quilting left. Of course I was quickly dazzled by all kinds of new sewing projects and have not worked on it at all.

I love batiks. I've just started collecting fabric for a wall quilt from the book Batik Beauties by Laurie Shifrin. It will probably be months before I can actually work on the quilt, but at least I can shop for fabric!

I started this quilt about two months ago. It has been sitting in a pile under the sewing machine since the first burst of inspiration.

I have named it "box of crayons" since I modeled it roughly on a pattern glimpsed in a book somewhere...now that the preliminary piecing is done, I find it lacking the "umph" it needs to make the project interesting.

I'm greasing up my scissors to give it a de - constructed edge. And, as an impetus to actually finishing (besides this blog of course!), I've entered it in the local county fair. Deadline: September 10th.

spontaneous doll-quilt

You can imagine how excited I was when I read about this month's theme. I immediately decided to do a doll-quilt (in the middle of packing for an interstate move, so I didn't think I would have the time for a large quilt top), picked out the fabrics, and today I finished one top:


The squares are 2x2 inches. I plan to make it a reversible quilt with 16 log cabin squares on the other side. More to come....

A Bright Baby Quilt

Hi, everyone. I'm pleased to meet and sew along with you all. Obligatory background information: I'm a soon-to-be 36 year old mom of twin 6 year old boys. We homeschool, so life is crazy-hectic and crazy-fun. I'm a transplanted Yankee living in the south (I'm from Ohio, and hence never knew I was a Yankee until I met my in-laws. Live and learn!) You can also find me at my regular blog, Flyin' Needles.

My quilt is a bright little thing destined for a close friend's new baby. I love the idea of a scrap quilt for this, because I am giving her pieces of my family's past. When I look at the fabric, I see new fabrics bought just for the new baby, fabrics from a picnic quilt she admired, fabrics from my sister's wedding quilt, and ones left over from sewing for my own boys.

The pattern is 'Spider Web' from Scrap Quilt - Strips and Spider Webs by Marcia Lasher.

I look forward to seeing everyone's projects progress.

Newbie Alert

Hello! I am new to this blog, but very happy to be here! I have been sewing at least as long as I have been knitting, perhaps even longer as my Mother was/is an avid sewer. I haven't been doing much sewing lately, but I plan on changing that as my fabric stash is still quite large & keeps growing! I love the idea of quilting and since I have never done it before I look forward to trying it along with the rest of you. We're still on holiday right now, but I think I just h=might 'have to' drop by the fabric shop for a bit of a browse .....

Hello, Sewers!

Hi everyone! I'm Jessica, and this is my first post to the sew-along. I live in Brooklyn, and am a knitter who is trying very hard to become a better sewer as well. I'm so glad this month's project is a quilting project, as I just happened to start taking a quilting class at Purl Patchwork in NYC! Our project for the class is to make a 4-block mini quilt--nothing too strenuous since none of us have ever quilted before.
After my first class, I was sent home with instructions to cut, and begin to sew together my block pieces:

And now I have all 4 of my quilt blocks finished! Hooray!
On to the sashing and the borders, and then I'll have to learn how to machine quilt. It's going to be cute and small and I can't wait till it's done!

My quilting ...

So after not finishing one project yet on time ::hanging head in shame::: I will finally finish this one!! Only because my project is in progress and because my baby boy is at that point where he doesn't want to be attatched to me 100% of the time - only 75% ;-).
I have to say, I'm excited to see quilting as I started a quilting class at the start of this summer. So this is something I'm working on and learning and having a blast with!
Anyway, I'm making some placemats ...


They will go to my grannie who only had one request "Use lots and lots of blue!" So I did. It's a set of 6 and I hope to add a few potholders to the mix. We'll see!

trying something different

My name is donna and apart from knitting I do a little bit of everything. I have only made two quilts before, so I consider myself a real beginner.
My first one was a made from a full kit (so no fabric decisions) and I got it professionally machine quilted. The second was a simple pattern using fat quarters and I used polar fleece for the backing. Not the most ideal for a quilt but great for a baby's play mat, which is its intended use.
To do something different I am going to make a quilted oven mitt and coordinating apron for this sew-a-long. The apron has a quilt block on the front for the pocket. Both of these patterns are from Denyse Schmidts book Quilts.
